A ROOKIE'S GUIDE TO DRAWING
CARS
By Claude
Ever heard of Foose designs? If you are a car fanatic, you
must know that California born car artist Chip Foose is a
living legend in his industry. He has created his own legacy of
amazing automobile designs and has his own TV show where his
team works to put together some amazing tricked out
machines
Automobiles seem to be in his blood. If you have a similar
passion for cars, why not learn how to design some of your
own?
Drawing cars is fun yet challenging; in this article, we try to
help you draw automobiles the right way, helping you transform
that idea onto paper. All you need is a little imagination and
the right guidelines to sketch various car designs.
For sketching cars, you are going to need some basic supplies
like paper, pencil, an eraser and not to forget, a picture or
model of a real car that you can use as a reference. You can
also use a pen to draw your car if you feel it gives the
desired effect; some artists also make use of paint to enhance
the visuals.
After you have arranged for all the necessary supplies, sit
down and get started. First, you need to focus on the reference
picture, after that you should proceed to draw some easy touch
pencil lines on your paper. Remember that these lines should
represent the outline and general shape of your reference
car.
Here below is a step-by-step guide to help you sketch your
dream car.
#1. Sketch the general shape of the car, just a few lines to
make the outer body.
#2. Draw the wheels of your car. Wheels are the hardest parts
of your entire drawing, so it is crucial for you to get them
bang on target. If your wheels do not look good, it would not
matter if the rest of the car is next to perfect, so make sure
to put all your effort into drawing those wheels.
#3. Your drawing will need some details, so sketch the
windows, headlights, doors etc of the car.
#4. Next step would be to get even more details into your
drawing, work on the intricate details of the car like the
door-handles, air intake, mirrors etc.
#5. When all this seems to take shape, go back to the wheels
and spend some quality time perfecting them.
#6. Now that you have a car on the sheet of paper, you can
start adding shadows to the design. The best way to add shadows
would be to imagine some light source coming from somewhere on
the paper, put a little mark at that point and add darker
shadows from wherever that mark is unable to reach.
#7. If you’ve executed the steps shown thus far, our car should
be coming along just fine, but do not forget to take one last
look at the wheels. If you feel that it fits and everything
looks right, you have a fantastic car design in your hands.
Hopefully, this article provided you with adequate information
to help you start on way to becoming a master at drawing cars.
If you keep practicing, you can perfect you newly learnt skill
in no time. So go ahead, get pencil on paper and give life to
your dream car, but remember to have patience and work hard in
order to see your efforts bear fruit.
